6 : Swordsman Accompanying A Demon
The first demon Tanjiro faces off against as a fully fledged member of the Demon Slayer corps is a pretty unique one. It has two Demon Blood Arts; The first allows it to dive into the shadows and appear out of nowhere; The second splits the demon in three, including some variance to his personality. Tanjiro finds the demon not long after sunset, just in time to save a sixteen year-old girl about to be taken and eaten.
Tanjiro asks the demon where the other girls are. He gets nothing but the sound of seething rage. He asks Kazumi to carry the girl while he hunts down the demon. It can hide on the floor and the wall.
Tanjiro arrives in the town and instantly begins to track the demon. He finds a man that was with one of the girls when she vanished who is noticeably shaken by the experience. With scent trails all over town, Tanjiro puts his nose to the ground and gives chase. Then, as the demon attempts to abduct another girl, Tanjiro intervenes, finding himself face to face with not one but three demons that can travel through the ground!
Yet another factor is introduced for keeping Nezuko demon urges in check. Whether, her sleeping long periods and hypnotizing are significant enough to tame her completely. Some might see this as an easy way out of potential conflict. However, I think that they will introduce conflict later in the series.
Tanjiro is now clad in the uniform of the Demon Slayer Corps. His Nichirin Sword on his hip, and Nezuko, now awake, in a special box made by Urokodaki on his back, he heads out for his first assignment. A town to the northwest where girls have been vanishing nightly. There, Tanjiro meets Kazumi, haggard with worry after his girlfriend's been abducted. Though he does catch the scent of a demon nearby, there's just no demon in sight. Tanjiro is sure that a demon is behind this sinister incident...
If I'm being honest, it was a little goofy to watch Tanjiro spend so much of the episode with his face down in the dirt as he literally sniffed out his mark, but the show was at least keen enough to frame it as a tongue-in-cheek joke. Kazumi is the boy we met briefly last week whose girlfriend was taken by a demon, and he serves as our everyman. He watches Tanjiro do his thing with bemusement, and his genuine terror at what's happening in his town keeps everything grounded in the first half. The episode gets stylish and atmospheric at times too, especially when the demon's next victim is swallowed into the inky black void that it generates to move about and seize its prey. 781b155fdc
